What Does Flattening a PDF Mean?
A PDF can contain interactive layers on top of its base content: fillable form fields, digital signatures, sticky note annotations, and highlight marks. Flattening merges all of these layers into the static page content, making the PDF read-only and ensuring it displays identically in every viewer.
When Should You Flatten a PDF?
- Submitting a completed form — Flattening locks in your answers so they can't be changed after submission.
- Sharing a reviewed document — Flatten comment annotations into the page before sending for printing or archiving.
- Improving compatibility — Some older PDF viewers and printers can't render interactive elements correctly. Flattening removes this risk.
- Reducing file size — Interactive form data adds overhead. Removing it can shrink the file.
How to Flatten a PDF
The cleanest way to flatten is to print the PDF to a PDF printer (on Windows: Microsoft Print to PDF; on Mac: Save as PDF from the Print dialog). This re-renders every page as static content, stripping all interactive layers. The result is a fully flattened PDF.
Alternatively, Adobe Acrobat Pro has a dedicated Flatten tool under the Print Production menu. For free browser-based flattening, the Print → Save as PDF method works reliably on all platforms.
Is Flattening Reversible?
No. Once a PDF is flattened, the interactive fields and annotations are permanently merged into the page. Keep a copy of the original interactive PDF before flattening if you may need to make changes later.
