How to Use Watermark PDF

Watermarks help you mark documents as DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, or SAMPLE before sharing — preventing unauthorized distribution and signaling the document's status to recipients. PDF Mate lets you add a custom text watermark to any PDF, entirely in your browser, with full control over size, color, opacity, and placement.

  1. 1

    Upload your PDF

Click "Select File" or drag your PDF into the upload area. The tool processes the file locally — nothing is sent to any server.

  2. 2

    Enter your watermark text

Type your watermark text — "CONFIDENTIAL," "DRAFT," your company name, or any custom text. Keep it short for best readability.

  3. 3

    Customize appearance

Set the font size, color, opacity, rotation angle, and position (center, tile across every page, or corner). A preview helps you adjust before applying.

  4. 4

    Apply and download

Click "Add Watermark." The watermark is embedded into every page of the PDF. Download the watermarked file.

Pro Tips

  • ✓Set opacity between 20–40% for a watermark that is visible but does not obscure the main content.
  • ✓Diagonal placement (45° angle) is the standard for CONFIDENTIAL and DRAFT watermarks — it covers the full page and is harder to crop out.
  • ✓Tiling repeats the watermark across the entire page in a grid pattern — effective for preventing unauthorized copying of image-heavy documents.
  • ✓Use a color that contrasts with the document background. Light gray works for dark text documents; red or navy works for white backgrounds.
  • ✓Watermarks added this way are embedded in the PDF content — they cannot be removed with a simple selection-delete in a PDF viewer. Specialized PDF editing software is required to remove them.

The watermarked PDF is downloaded directly to your device. No file is stored on any server — the entire process runs locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add an image watermark instead of text?

The current tool supports text watermarks. For image-based watermarks (such as a company logo), you can convert your logo to text initials or wait for image watermark support.

Will the watermark appear on every page?

Yes. The watermark is applied to all pages of the PDF by default.

Can I customize the watermark color and size?

Yes. You can set the text, font size, color (using a color picker), opacity, rotation angle, and position.

Is the watermark permanent?

The watermark is embedded in the PDF content. It cannot be removed with standard PDF viewer tools. However, advanced PDF editing software can strip embedded watermarks from PDFs.

Can I watermark a password-protected PDF?

No — the PDF must be unlocked first. Use the Unlock PDF tool, apply the watermark, then re-protect if needed.

Does adding a watermark affect the file quality?

No. The watermark is a separate vector layer added over the existing content. Original text, images, and formatting are unchanged.

Is my PDF uploaded when I add a watermark?

No. Watermarking runs entirely in your browser. Your document never leaves your device.
