What Is Booklet Printing?
Booklet printing arranges PDF pages so that when you print double-sided and fold the paper in half, the pages appear in the correct reading order. A 16-page PDF becomes a folded 8-page booklet. This is useful for brochures, zines, programmes, and manuals.
Requirements
You need a printer that can print double-sided (duplex printing). If your printer doesn't support automatic duplexing, you can still booklet-print by manually flipping the paper halfway through.
Printing a Booklet on Windows
- Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader (free).
- Click Print → Page Sizing & Handling → Booklet.
- Set Binding to "Left" (for left-to-right reading) or "Right".
- Ensure "Both sides" is selected under Booklet subset.
- Click Print — your printer handles the correct page ordering automatically.
Printing a Booklet on Mac
- Open the PDF in Preview.
- Go to File → Print.
- In the print dialog, look for "Layout" in the dropdown — set Pages per Sheet to 2.
- Enable Two-Sided printing with "Short Edge Binding".
- Note: This creates a simple 2-up layout, not full booklet ordering. For proper booklet ordering on Mac, use Adobe Reader or a dedicated booklet-printing utility.
Online Booklet Preparation
If your PDF doesn't have a page count divisible by 4, you'll need to add blank pages first — use the Merge PDF tool to combine your PDF with a blank-page PDF to reach the right count. 4, 8, 12, 16, 20… pages all work. An odd number of pages will leave blank pages in the booklet, which is fine.
