What Is Redaction?
Redaction is the permanent removal of sensitive content from a document. Proper redaction replaces selected text or areas with solid black boxes — the underlying information is destroyed, not just hidden. This is different from covering text with a black shape in Word, which can be removed by selecting behind it.
Why Proper Redaction Matters
Simply drawing a black rectangle over text in a PDF editor often doesn't remove the underlying text — it's still in the file and can be copied, searched, or revealed by removing the overlay. True redaction permanently destroys the data so it cannot be recovered.
Step-by-Step: Redact a PDF
- Open the Redact PDF tool.
- Upload your PDF.
- Select or highlight the areas to redact.
- Confirm and apply — the selected content is permanently destroyed.
- Download the redacted PDF.
Common Redaction Scenarios
- Removing Social Security numbers or passport numbers before sharing a form
- Blacking out financial account numbers in statements
- Hiding employee salary details in HR documents
- Removing witness names from legal documents
- GDPR compliance — removing personally identifiable information before disclosing documents
Always Verify After Redacting
After applying redaction, try selecting text over the redacted areas. If you can still select it, the redaction was not properly applied. A proper redaction tool will confirm the content is destroyed before you download.
