How to Use Sign PDF
Signing a PDF used to mean printing, signing by hand, and scanning — a multi-step process most people find tedious. PDF Mate lets you add a signature directly to any PDF in your browser, using a drawn, typed, or uploaded signature. Nothing is uploaded to a server. Sign from any device, anywhere.
- 1
Upload your PDF
Click "Select File" or drag your PDF into the upload area. The document is loaded into the browser — nothing is sent to a server.
- 2
Create your signature
Choose one of three methods: Draw (use your mouse or finger on a touchscreen), Type (enter your name in a signature-style font), or Upload (add an image of your handwritten signature).
- 3
Place the signature
Click anywhere on the document to place your signature. Drag to reposition it, and resize with the corner handles until it looks right.
- 4
Add date or initials (optional)
Optionally add a date field or initials block to other signature lines on the document.
- 5
Download the signed PDF
Click "Download" to save the signed document. The signature is permanently embedded in the PDF.
Pro Tips
- ✓For a professional look, use a tablet stylus or touchscreen finger to draw your signature — it closely resembles a pen signature.
- ✓If uploading a signature image, use a photo with a white or transparent background against a document-colored background for the cleanest result.
- ✓Zoom into the document before placing your signature so you can position it precisely on the signature line.
- ✓Add a date field next to your signature for documents that require both.
- ✓Note: PDF Mate adds a visual signature (image embedded in the PDF). It is not a cryptographically-certified digital signature. For legally binding e-signatures in regulated industries, use a dedicated e-signature platform.
Your signed PDF is generated entirely in your browser and downloaded directly to your device. No file is transmitted to any server — your document stays private.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a PDF signed with this tool legally binding?
For most everyday contracts, agreements, and forms, a visual signature on a PDF is legally valid in most jurisdictions under e-signature laws (such as ESIGN in the US and eIDAS in the EU). However, for regulated industries requiring certified digital signatures (e.g., certain government documents), a dedicated e-signature platform with audit trails may be required.
What is the difference between a visual signature and a digital signature?
A visual signature is an image of your signature placed on the PDF — it looks like a handwritten signature. A digital signature is a cryptographic certificate that proves the document has not been altered since signing. PDF Mate adds visual signatures.
Can I sign on a phone or tablet?
Yes. The Draw mode is optimized for touchscreens — use your finger or stylus to draw your signature directly on the screen.
Can I sign multiple pages or multiple signature lines?
Yes. You can place your signature as many times as needed on any page. Each placement is independent.
Is my document uploaded to sign it?
No. The entire signing process runs in your browser. Your PDF and your signature image never leave your device.
Can I remove or edit my signature after downloading?
Once downloaded, the signature is embedded in the PDF. You cannot remove it with a standard PDF viewer. To redo a signature, go back and create a new signed version from the original.
What file format is the signed document?
The output is a standard PDF file — compatible with all PDF viewers including Adobe Reader, Preview, and any modern web browser.
